Broadbent, Michael, MW Vintage Wine. Fifty years of tasting over three centuries of wine Little Brown, October 2002, 560 pages, hardback, £50 Publication of this volume was timed to coincide with Michael Broadbent’s seventy-fifth birthday and his celebration of fifty years in the wine trade. Drawing on his 133 notebooks, in which he has meticulously described over 85,000 wines that he has tasted during that time, this volume concentrates on the classics. His personal record of Bordeaux (from 1784) and Burgundy (from 1858) fill almost half the book, but there is also space for his beloved Germany, for Tokaj, for Chateau Musar, for Grange and for Ridge, as well as very many others. It is a delight to dip in to, as the tasting notes and brief vintage comments are interspersed with short paragraphs on individuals and organisations in the trade, on wine making, soil influences, storage and food pairing. ‘A more diligent archivist than we wine lovers deserve’ - Jancis Robinson MW ‘This is a book so full of information, anecdote, and opinion, as well as wine descriptions, that it’s almost an unwitting work of social history’ — Stephen Brook

Long on history and personalities, the book also does a good job of spelling out the relationship between some of the more important vineyard sites and the wineries that use them’ — Harvey Steiman)
